(Port) Wine of the month September 2022: Niepoort Vintage Port 1942
There are very few if not only one Liter-bottle of Port which are worth looking out for and Dirk’s comment to this peculiar format is: “A liter-bottle is the perfect amount of Port for a couple if one does not drink”. Last time tasted, no: drunk around the meeting of the Confraria do Vinho do Porto. After lunch everyone was gone except me and half the 1942: Unbelievably young, dark-red colour. Subtle tobacco, malty notes and fresh herbs dominate the bouquet. Alive and kicking, the palate could easily be from the 1970s: coffee, honey and malt with a hint of noticeable acidity. Multi-layered aftertaste. Port at it’s best from a perfect bottle. 20/20
